What We’re Reading: The Go Giver
“Most people just laugh when they hear that the secret to success is giving. Then again, most people are nowhere near as successful as they wish they were.” –The Go GiverWith the holidays just around the corner, your arms and checkbooks are probably wide open. For most people, this is the time of time of year when they are most conscious of giving. But the spirit that encompasses the holiday season can help your business year round, at least according to what we’re reading: Bob Burg and David Mann’s book The Go Giver.

The novel presents its lessons in a parable, as the reader follows the quest of businessman Joe trying to secure an account with a wealthy patron. Like most parables, the names aren’t important, but through his quest Joe learns the, “5 Laws of Stratospheric Success.”

The 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success:

“1. The Law of Value: Your true worth is determined by how much you give to others.
2. The Law of Compensation: Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them
3. The Law of Influence: Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first
4. The Law of Authenticity: The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself
5. The Law of Receptivity: Be open to gifts from others”

The simplest lesson of this book is to give passion. Give your passion as completely to your business as you do to your family or friends. If you find you have no passion for what you’re doing, consider making a change.

Though some reviewers criticize the book for lacking plot development and female characters, we didn’t over-analyze the book. The Go Giver acts like a cookie, simple and delicious.

So as we enter the Holiday Season running here at Athens Social Media, we’re challenging ourselves to keep generosity in practice in our office as well as our homes. We challenge you to try the same.
